290 Alabama State Board of Education

Ala. Admin. Code r. 290-2-2-.01 School Facilities: Approval Of Construction

(1) New construction or renovation of school facilities, including maintenance or repair of HVAC or roofing, with an estimated cost of $750,000 or more shall have the approval of the State Superintendent of Education.

(2) New construction shall take school only at place centers approved by the State Superintendent of Education.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 290-2-2-.02 Construction Requirements For Public Schools

(1) Alabama Building Commission laws, rules, regulations and applicable standard documents for elementary and secondary public school construction shall be followed.

(2) Projects totally constructed with funds other than Alabama Public School and College Authority bond funds shall follow BULLETIN 1983, NO. 26, CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS FOR COUNTY AND CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, as revised.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 290-2-2-.03 Requirements For A School To Be Classified As An Approved Center

(1) A school classified as an approved center must have the following minimum number of classroom teachers and students for grades taught at the school site:

(2) A school with grades kindergarten through twelve must meet the minimum requirements for the grade ranges listed above. Example:

7 teachers and 140 students in grades K-6 6 teachers and 175 students in grades 7-9 6 teachers and 175 students in grades 10-12.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 290-2-2-.04 School Site Requirements

The school grounds must be large enough to provide outdoor areas for physical education and recreation. The minimum requirements for school sites are as follows:

(1) An elementary school is a school with any combination of Grades K-8, and must not contain a grade above 8.

(a) Both existing and proposed elementary schools must have a base of five acres of land plus one acre for each 100 students.

(2) A middle school is a school with a combination of grades 4-9, but not including both grades 4 and 9.

(a) Both existing and proposed middle schools must have a base of ten acres of land plus one acre for each 100 students.

(3) A secondary school is a school with any combination of grades 5-12 but must contain a grade above eight.

(a) Existing secondary schools must have a base of 15 acres of land plus one acre for each 100 students.

(b) A proposed secondary school must have a minimum base of 30 acres of land plus one acre for each 100 students.

(4) A unit school is a school that includes grades below five and above eight with a principal on a single campus.

(a) An existing unit school must have a minimum of 25 acres of land.

(b) A proposed unit school must have a minimum base of 30 acres of land plus one acre for each 100 students.

(5) Area Vocational Schools.

(a) Both existing and proposed area vocational schools must have a minimum of 10 acres of land.
