Considérant:
que, par arrêt de ce jour, la IIe Cour civile du Tribunal fédéral a admis le recours de droit public connexe formé par le recourant et annulé l'arrêt attaqué (5P.11/2006);
que, par conséquent, le présent recours en réforme a perdu son objet;
que ce procédé s'étant révélé inutile, il convient de mettre les frais judiciaires à la charge du recourant (art. 156 al. 6 OJ, qui demeure applicable en vertu de l'art. 132 al. 1 LTF; Messmer/Imboden, Die eidgenössischen Rechtsmittel in Zivilsachen, Zurich 1992, ch. 27 p. 36), sans qu'il y ait lieu d'allouer de dépens à l'intimée, qui n'a pas été invitée à répondre.
Par ces motifs, vu les art. 40 OJ et 72 PCF, le Tribunal fédéral prononce:

Le recours est sans objet et la cause est rayée du rôle.

Un émolument judiciaire de 1'000 fr. est mis à la charge du défendeur.
3.
La présente décision est communiquée en copie aux mandataires des parties et à la Chambre civile de la Cour de justice du canton de Genève.
