Vu:
la demande d'assistance judiciaire jointe au recours de droit public;
l'ordonnance du Président de la Ire Cour de droit public du 21 novembre 2001, constatant le retrait du recours et rayant la cause du rôle (1P.689/2001);
la lettre de Me Paolo Ghidoni datée du 5 septembre 2003, par laquelle celui-ci demande une décision sur la demande d'assistance judiciaire;

Considérant:
Que la contestation portée devant le Tribunal fédéral a pris fin sans qu'il fût statué sur la demande d'assistance judiciaire jointe au recours;
Que les conditions fixées par l'art. 152 de la loi fédérale d'organisation judiciaire étaient satisfaites, compte tenu, en particulier, que la décision attaquée s'est révélée viciée et a été annulée par l'autorité cantonale de recours saisie en même temps que le Tribunal fédéral;
Que la possibilité de recourir à une autorité cantonale était par ailleurs incertaine;
Qu'il se justifie donc de donner suite à la demande d'assistance judiciaire.

Par ces motifs, le Tribunal fédéral:

La demande d'assistance judiciaire est admise et Me Ghidoni est désigné en qualité d'avocat d'office du recourant.
2.
La caisse du Tribunal fédéral versera une indemnité de 500 fr. à Me Ghidoni à titre d'honoraires.
3.
La présente décision est communiquée en copie à Me Ghidoni, pour lui-même et pour le recourant, et à la Cour d'appel pénal du Tribunal cantonal du canton de Fribourg.
