Der Präsident zieht in Erwägung:

Der angefochtene Entscheid wurde der Beschwerdeführerin gemäss Gerichtsurkunde am 21. Juli 2008 zugestellt. Die 30 Tage betragende Beschwerdefrist von Art. 100 Abs. 1 BGG endete deshalb unter Berücksichtigung des Fristenstillstands gemäss Art. 46 Abs. 1 lit. b StGB am 15. September 2008. Die Beschwerde wurde gemäss Poststempel erst am 17. September 2008 auf die Post gebracht. Sie ist folglich verspätet. Auf die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG nicht einzutreten.

Die Gerichtskosten sind der Beschwerdeführerin aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege ist in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren aussichtslos erschienen. Der finanziellen Lage der Beschwerdeführerin ist durch eine herabgesetzte Gerichtsgebühr Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG).
Demnach erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
2.
Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.
3.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 500.-- werden der Beschwerdeführerin auferlegt.
4.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Obergericht des Kantons Zürich, III. Strafkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
