Das Bundesgericht zieht in Erwägung:

Der Beschwerdeführer befindet sich in der Justizvollzugsanstalt Pöschwies im Vollzug einer Verwahrung. Seit dem 21. Januar 2011 ist er in der Sicherheitsabteilung in Einzelhaft. Mit einer Beschwerde an das Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Zürich beantragte er unter anderem, er sei in den Normalvollzug zu verlegen. Die Vorinstanz wies das Rechtsmittel am 14. Dezember 2011 ab, soweit darauf eingetreten wurde. Sinngemäss strebt der Beschwerdeführer auch vor Bundesgericht eine Verlegung in den Normalvollzug an. Soweit er etwas anderes verlangt (vgl. z.B. Antrag auf S. 1), ist darauf nicht einzutreten.
In Anwendung von Art. 109 Abs. 3 BGG kann auf die Ausführungen der Vorinstanz verwiesen werden (vgl. angefochtenen Entscheid S. 4-7 E. 2-4). Ob die Beschwerde den Begründungsanforderungen von Art. 42 Abs. 2 bzw. Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG genügt, kann offen bleiben. Jedenfalls ergibt sich daraus nicht, und es ist auch nicht ersichtlich, dass und inwieweit die Erwägungen der Vorinstanz gegen das Recht im Sinne von Art. 95 BGG verstossen könnten.
Die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 109 BGG abzuweisen, soweit darauf einzutreten ist.

Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Seiner finanziellen Lage ist bei deren Bemessung Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG).
Demnach erkennt das Bundesgericht:

Die Beschwerde wird abgewiesen, soweit darauf einzutreten ist.
2.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 800.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.

Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Zürich, 3. Abteilung, Einzelrichter, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
