K.________ appealed a Basel-Stadt social insurance judgment to the Federal Supreme Court in a disability insurance matter. The appeal was transmitted to the court on 16 January 2012, but the court held that it was filed after the 30-day deadline and also did not meet the formal requirements of Art. 42 BGG. It therefore did not enter into the matter under Art. 108 para. 1 lit. a and b BGG. Given the circumstances, the court waived court costs under Art. 66 para. 1 sentence 2 BGG.

Where such grounds exist, the Federal Supreme Court may decline to enter into the appeal in summary procedure under Art. 108 BGG. Court costs may exceptionally be waived in light of the circumstances.

Nach Einsicht
in die dem Bundesgericht zuständigkeitshalber überwiesene Beschwerde des K.________ vom 16. Januar 2012 (Poststempel) gegen den Entscheid des Sozialversicherungsgerichts Basel-Stadt vom 24. August 2011,
in Erwägung,
dass die Beschwerde des Versicherten vom 16. Januar 2012 (Poststempel) nicht innert der 30-tägigen Rechtsmittelfrist (Art. 100 Abs. 1 BGG), sondern klarerweise verspätet (Art. 44-48 BGG) erhoben worden ist,
dass deshalb bereits aus diesem Grunde auf das offensichtlich unzulässige Rechtsmittel nicht einzutreten ist (Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. a BGG),
dass überdies die Beschwerde vom 16. Januar 2012 den in Art. 42 Abs. 1 und 2 BGG statuierten Formerfordernissen offensichtlich nicht zu genügen vermag, weshalb auch insoweit ein offensichtlich unzulässiges Rechtsmittel (Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b BGG) vorliegt (vgl. BGE 136 I 65 E. 1.3.1 S. 68 und 134 II 244 E. 2.1 S. 245 f.),
dass deshalb auf die - insgesamt offensichtlich unzulässige - Beschwerde in Anwendung von Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. a und b BGG nicht eingetreten werden kann,
dass es sich bei den gegebenen Verhältnissen rechtfertigt, von der Erhebung von Gerichtskosten für das bundesgerichtliche Verfahren umständehalber abzusehen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 Satz 2 BGG),
dass in den Fällen des Art. 108 Abs. 1 BGG das vereinfachte Verfahren zum Zuge kommt und der Abteilungspräsident zuständig ist,
erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
2.
Es werden keine Gerichtskosten erhoben.
3.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien, dem Sozialversicherungsgericht Basel-Stadt und dem Bundesamt für Sozialversicherungen schriftlich mitgeteilt.
