The Federal Supreme Court dismissed the criminal appeal against a cantonal judgment for speeding on a motorway. Das Bundesgericht zieht in Erwägung:

Der Beschwerdeführer überschritt auf der Autobahn die gemäss Signalisation erlaubte Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 100 km/h nach Abzug der Toleranz um 8 km/h. Die Vorinstanz bestrafte ihn mit Urteil vom 18. April 2011 im Berufungsverfahren mit einer Busse von Fr. 60.-- bzw. einer Ersatzfreiheitsstrafe von einem Tag. Dagegen wendet er sich mit Beschwerde ans Bundesgericht.
In Anwendung von Art. 109 Abs. 3 BGG kann auf die Ausführungen der Vorinstanz verwiesen werden (vgl. angefochtenen Entscheid S. 3- 5 E. II/2), denen grundsätzlich nichts beizufügen ist. Zum einen ist es unter dem Gesichtswinkel von Art. 95 BGG nicht zu beanstanden, dass die Vorinstanz eine Eingabe des Beschwerdeführers an das Amtsgericht als Begehren um Dispensation von der Hauptverhandlung interpretierte und somit eine Verletzung des rechtlichen Gehörs verneinte. Unter den gegebenen Umständen musste auch keine Anhörung vor einem Gericht in Ulm stattfinden. Zum anderen verletzt die Höhe der Busse kein Bundesrecht. Die Vorinstanz hat ausdrücklich auf die Krankheit des Beschwerdeführers und seine finanziellen Schwierigkeiten hingewiesen. Dass die Umstände nicht wirklich berücksichtigt worden wären, stellt eine durch nichts gerechtfertigte Annahme des Beschwerdeführers dar. Da die Ersatzfreiheitsstrafe nur für den Fall, dass die Busse nicht bezahlt wird, zum Zuge kommt, muss sich das Bundesgericht zurzeit mit der Frage, ob die Haft dem Beschwerdeführer zumutbar ist, nicht befassen.
Die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 109 BGG abzuweisen, soweit darauf einzutreten ist.

Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege ist in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren aussichtslos erschienen. Der finanziellen Lage des Beschwerdeführers (vgl. act. 13) ist bei der Bemessung der Gerichtsgebühr Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG).
Demnach erkennt das Bundesgericht:

Die Beschwerde wird abgewiesen, soweit darauf einzutreten ist.
2.
Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.
3.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 800.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.
4.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Obergericht des Kantons Solothurn, Strafkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
