Der Präsident zieht in Erwägung:

Die Beschwerde richtet sich dagegen, dass auf einen kantonalen Rekurs des Beschwerdeführers X.________ nicht eingetreten wurde, weil er zum Rechtsmittel nicht legitimiert war. Dagegen wenden sich der damalige Rekurrent und seine Ehefrau ans Bundesgericht.

Mit der Frage der Beschwerdelegitimation im kantonalen Rekursverfahren befassen sich die Beschwerdeführer in ihrer Eingabe vor Bundesgericht nicht. Da nur dies Gegenstand des vorliegenden Verfahrens sein kann, genügt die Beschwerde den Begründungsanforderungen von Art. 42 Abs. 2 bzw. Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG nicht.

Die Ehefrau nahm im Übrigen am kantonalen Verfahren nicht teil. Sie ist folglich zur vorliegenden Beschwerde von vornherein nicht legitimiert.

Auf die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG nicht einzutreten.

Die Gerichtskosten sind den Beschwerdeführern je zur Hälfte unter solidarischer Haftung aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG).

Nachdem die Beschwerdeführer mit Verfügung vom 27. April 2008 aufgefordert worden waren, dem Bundesgericht bis zum 18. Mai 2009 einen Kostenvorschuss von Fr. 2'000.-- einzuzahlen, teilten sie mit Schreiben vom 15. Mai 2009 mit, sie seien bedürftig. Die Eingabe ist als Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege entgegenzunehmen. Dieses Gesuch ist indessen in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren der Beschwerdeführer aussichtslos erschienen. Ihrer finanziellen Lage ist bei der Höhe der Gerichtsgebühr Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG).

Demnach erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.

3.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 500.-- werden den Beschwerdeführern je zur Hälfte unter solidarischer Haftung auferlegt.

4.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Strafgericht Basel-Stadt, Präsident der Rekurskammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
