Vu le recours en matière civile interjeté le 16 mai 2012 par X.________ contre le jugement du 30 mars 2012 par lequel la Cour civile I du Tribunal cantonal du canton du Valais a condamné le recourant à verser la somme de 34'121 fr. à Y.________, intimée au recours;
Vu l'ordonnance présidentielle du 1er juin 2012 fixant à l'intimée un délai au 2 juillet 2012 pour déposer sa réponse éventuelle;
Vu la réponse du 2 juillet 2012 au terme de laquelle l'intimée conclut à l'irrecevabilité du recours, voire au rejet de celui-ci dans la mesure de sa recevabilité;
Vu la lettre du 2 juillet 2012 par laquelle le conseil du recourant informe le Tribunal fédéral que son mandant retire purement et simplement le recours;
Considérant qu'il y a lieu de prendre acte de ce retrait et de rayer la cause du rôle (art. 32 al. 2 LTF);
Vu, quant aux frais, l'art. 66 al. 2 et 3 LTF;
Considérant que l'intimée, qui s'est déterminée sur le recours dans le délai imparti à cette fin, a droit à des dépens en application de l'art. 68 al. 4 LTF en liaison avec l'art. 66 al. 3 LTF,
Ordonne:

La cause est rayée du rôle par suite de retrait du recours.
2.
Les frais judiciaires, arrêtés à 500 fr., sont mis à la charge du recourant.
3.
Le recourant versera à l'intimée une indemnité de 1'500 fr. à titre de dépens.
4.
La présente ordonnance est communiquée aux mandataires des parties et à la Cour civile I du Tribunal cantonal du canton du Valais.

Whether the withdrawn appeal should be struck from the docket
The Court took formal notice of the withdrawal and struck the case from the roll.
Once the appellant expressly withdrew the appeal, there was no longer any need to decide the merits; the matter had to be removed from the docket under Art. 32(2) LTF.
Allocation of court costs and party compensation after withdrawal of the appeal
Court costs of CHF 500 were charged to the appellant, and the respondent was awarded CHF 1,500 in costs.
Under Arts. 66(2)-(3) and 68(4) LTF, the withdrawing appellant bears the judicial fees and must compensate the respondent, who had filed submissions within the set deadline.
