550 Board of Medical Scholarship Awards

Ala. Admin. Code r. 550-X-2-.01 Number Awarded

A number of merit scholarships equal to not more than five percent of the students enrolled in the medical schools in the State of Alabama shall be awarded each year, contingent upon funds being available.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 550-X-2-.02 Minimum Requirement For Scholarships

(a) All full-time students in the medical schools of the State of Alabama, as well as members of the incoming freshman class of such schools, who are Alabama residents, shall be eligible for merit scholarships. No application shall be required.

(b) Prospective recipients must meet at least two of the following requirements:

(1) Maintain a 3.75 overall grade point average in undergraduate course work.

(2) Have scored a minimum of 30 on the MCAT exam, the first time taken.

(3) Have a 9 or better admissions committee rating.

(c) Records of eligible students shall be reviewed by the admissions officers of the respective schools. Fifteenstudents from UAB and six students from the University of South Alabama shall be selected by such admissions committees for interviews with the Board.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 550-X-2-.03 Awarding Of Merit Scholarships

(a) Merit Scholarships shall be awarded primarily on the basis of the student’s scholastic achievement, medical aptitude, and character. All information available, which reflects upon such qualifications, shall be considered by the Board.

(b) At the selection meeting, each Board member shall rate each candidate from one to ten, with one indicating the lowest priority and ten equaling the highest priority. Candidates will be selected based upon the highest average scores of such priority ratings.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 550-X-2-.04 Amount Of Merit Scholarship

Each merit scholarship shall be in the amount of up to $5,000.00 per annum and shall be renewable for a maximum of four years, for a maximum total of $20,000.00. All merit scholarship, and renewals thereof, shall be contingent upon funds being available.

Ala. Admin. Code r. 550-X-2-.05 Renewal Of Merit Scholarship

Each merit scholar must remain in the upper twenty percent of his or her class in order for the scholarship to be renewed. The Executive Committee shall review the status of all scholarship recipients at the end of each academic year in order to determine whether or not the scholarship should be renewed.
