Der Präsident zieht in Erwägung:

Im angefochtenen Entscheid wurde auf ein Wiederherstellungsgesuch des Beschwerdeführers nicht eingetreten, weil dieser keinen Wiederherstellungsgrund geltend gemacht hatte und ein solcher auch nicht ersichtlich war. Im vorliegenden Verfahren kann sich das Bundesgericht ausschliesslich mit der Frage befassen, wie es sich mit dem nicht geltend gemachten Wiederherstellungsgrund verhält. Der Beschwerdeführer hätte sich gemäss Art. 42 Abs. 2 bzw. Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG mit dieser Frage befassen müssen. Statt dessen legt er seinen Fall materiell dar, wozu sich das Bundesgericht heute nicht äussern kann. Auf die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG nicht einzutreten.

Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege ist in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren aussichtslos erschienen. Der finanziellen Lage des Beschwerdeführers ist bei der Bemessung der Gerichtsgebühr Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG). Dem Beschwerdegegner ist keine Entschädigung auszurichten, weil er im Verfahren vor Bundesgericht keine Umtriebe hatte.
Demnach erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

2.
Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.

3.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 500.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.

4.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Kantonsgericht St. Gallen, Strafkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
